It was a busy day for the  Rickmansworth Neighbourhood Policing Team on Sunday 27th July whilst at The Rickmansworth market, PCSO 6411 Beeson spotted a shoplifter. Our PCSO escorted the offender back to the shop, where the stolen items were recovered and returned and the offender was subsequently arrested by Police Officers.

Meanwhile, a suspected pickpocket eyeing up potential targets on the High Street quickly had a change of heart after spotting our officers on patrol. Please be vigilant whilst looking at market stalls and enjoying yourselves, please be aware of distraction thefts.

Please see below, PCSO 6411 BEESON's top tips on how to keep an eye out for distraction theft thieves and how they may target victims.

Stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Always be alert in busy public areas, particularly tourist spots or transport hubs.
  • Trust your instincts—if someone’s behaviour seems odd or invasive, be cautious.
  • Watch for common distraction techniques.

  • Ask for help (directions, signing a petition).
  • Spill something on you (like a drink) and “help” clean it up.
  • Drop money or items and ask if they are yours.
  • Create a fake argument or loud commotion to draw your attention.
  • Secure your Valuables.

  • Keep wallets, phones, and bags close to your body.
  • Use crossbody bags with zips facing inward.
  • Don’t hang bags over chairs or leave them on the floor unattended.
  • Report any suspicious behaviour, if something feels wrong or you witness a distraction theft or attempt report immediately.
